Roger Waters
September 6, 1943
Roger Waters became the primary creative leader of Pink Floyd after their original songwriter departed in 1968. He played bass guitar, provided lead vocals, and wrote the concepts for a string of massively successful studio albums. He helped shape the experimental direction of the group on records like Atom Heart Mother in 1970 and Meddle in 1971.
He gained massive global popularity after writing the lyrics for The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973. He continued steering the band through highly successful concept albums including Wish You Were Here in 1975, Animals in 1977, and The Wall in 1979. He remained the chief lyricist and a dominant force in the lineup from 1968 until his departure in 1985. He then transitioned to releasing solo albums and staging large-scale concert tours through 2025.
