 Bill Ward

May 5, 1948

Black Sabbath featured founding member William Thomas Ward as the powerhouse behind the drums from 1968 to 1980 and again for various reunions through 2012. His heavy, jazz-inflected style anchored the group's eponymous debut and the genre-defining Paranoid. He delivered thunderous rhythms on Master of Reality and Vol. 4, becoming an architect of the heavy metal sound through his use of complex fills and physical intensity.

Beyond his primary role, he contributed lead vocals to the tracks It's Alright and Swinging the Chain. His steady presence continued across the albums Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy, and Never Say Die! before he performed on the 1980 release Heaven and Hell. During this era, he also participated in diverse studio sessions, showcasing a versatile rhythmic approach that extended beyond the heavy rock landscape.

On July 5, 2025, Bill returned with the rest of the original Black Sabbath lineup for a special concert in Ozzy's honor titled "Back to the Beginning".
