Ed Cassidy
May 4, 1923 – December 6, 2012
Edward Claude Cassidy co founded Spirit in 1967 and served as the primary drummer and percussionist from 1967 to 1972, and again from 1974 to 1997. His visual trademark included a shaved head and black attire while he played a unique kit featuring an oversized bass drum. He contributed to the success of the albums Clear and The Family That Plays Together, which contained the hit single I Got a Line on You.
The experimental nature of his rhythmic style helped the group explore psychedelic and progressive rock on Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. After a brief departure to form the band Styx in 1973, he returned to record Spirit of 76 and Son of Spirit. His career through 1980 was marked by technical precision and a jazz influenced approach that appeared on the release Farther Along and the project Future Games.
