 John Densmore

December 1, 1944

John Densmore became the drummer for the Doors in 1965 after joining keyboard player Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and singer Jim Morrison. Drawing on jazz as well as rock influences, his inventive drumming became an essential part of the band's distinctive sound on albums including The Doors, Strange Days, Waiting for the Sun, Morrison Hotel, and L.A. Woman.

After the Doors ended following Morrison's death in 1971, Densmore played with the Butts Band before concentrating on writing, theater, and other creative projects. He later reunited with Manzarek and Krieger for special performances but declined to participate in full-time reunion tours. Densmore remains active as an author, speaker, and occasional performer.
