Danny Seraphine
August 28, 1948
Danny Seraphine became the original drummer for the horn-driven rock band Chicago Transit Authority when they formed in 1967. The group shortened their name to Chicago in 1969 before releasing their self-titled debut album that same year. He utilized a unique jazz-influenced drumming style that anchored the rhythm section on massive hit records throughout the next decade, including Chicago II in 1970 and Chicago VII in 1974. His steady timekeeping and complex arrangements helped define the signature sound of the ensemble on all of their major record releases.
He remained an official member of the group for over two decades and played on all of their studio albums until he left the lineup in 1990. He later formed a new band called California Transit Authority in 2006 to perform updated versions of early rock music tracks.
