 Alex Lifeson


August 27, 1953

Alex Lifeson became a founding member of Rush when he formed the band with childhood friends in 1968. He played lead and acoustic guitar, synthesizers, and stringed instruments like the mandolin and bouzouki. His guitar work shaped the sound of the band on their self-titled debut album in 1974. He continued recording with the trio on major albums like 2112 in 1976 and Permanent Waves in 1980.

He remained an official member of the group through all of their studio recordings and live tours until they stopped performing in 2015. He later created a new musical group called Envy of None in 2021 and released a self-titled album with them in 2022.

Neil Murray


August 27, 1950

In 1978, Neil Murray secured the role of official bass guitarist for the blues rock band Whitesnake. He had already spent years performing with other groups, including Hanson in 1974 and the progressive rock group National Health in 1976. He played on early Whitesnake albums like Trouble in 1978 and Ready an Willing in 1980. His stable bass lines anchored the studio sound and live performances of the group until he left in 1982.

Whitesnake brought him back into the official lineup in 1984. He recorded tracks for their self-titled album that came out in 1987. He later played bass for Black Sabbath starting in 1989 and joined the touring band for Brian May in 1992. He continued playing with different rock projects for many decades.

Tim Bogert


August 27, 1944 – January 13, 2021

Tim Bogert played bass guitar and saxophone as an official member of the psychedelic rock group Vanilla Fudge starting in 1966. He recorded their self-titled debut album in 1967, which featured a slow rock version of the track You Keep Me Hangin On. He performed on four more studio albums with the band before the original group split up in 1970.

He formed a heavy rock group called Cactus later in 1970 with drummer Carmine Appice. He played on four studio releases with that lineup, including Restrictions in 1971. He joined forces with guitarist Jeff Beck in 1972 to create the power trio Beck Bogert Appice. They released a self-titled studio record in 1973 and a live album before breaking up in 1974. He worked as a session player for guitarist Bo Diddley on a 1976 album and participated in a Vanilla Fudge reunion record in 1984.
