Moe Tucker

August 26, 1947

Maureen Ann "Moe" Tucker became the definitive drummer for The Velvet Underground in late 1965. She stood up while playing a stripped-down drum kit with mallets instead of drumsticks. Her minimalist style defined the rhythm on their classic studio albums from 1967 to 1970. She sang lead vocals on a few tracks, including After Hours in 1969.

She took a temporary break from the group in 1970 during her first pregnancy. She returned for live performances in late 1970 and stayed through late 1971. She then contributed to various independent music projects throughout the late 1970s. She began releasing solo albums in 1981 and participated in full band reunion tours during 1993.
