 Hughie Thomasson

August 13, 1952 – September 9, 2007

The soaring twin-guitar leads of southern rock found a permanent champion when Hughie Thomasson formed Outlaws in 1967. He anchored the guitar lineup as a primary songwriter and singer, guiding the group through its entire recording run until 1996. His lightning-fast picking style on the Fender Stratocaster helped push the band into the spotlight, blending classic country textures with blistering rock energy. Fans quickly fell in love with his epic guitar workouts on the self-titled 1975 debut album.

The momentum continued building as the guitar master powered through landmark studio records like Lady in Waiting and Hurry Sundown. His fierce live energy was captured perfectly on the gold-certified 1978 double live album Bring It Back Alive. Right at the turn of the decade, he scored another massive hit with a hard-charging rendition of Ghost Riders in the Sky. He later brought his fiery guitar work to Lynyrd Skynyrd starting in 1996 and continued writing and performing music until his final years.
