 Mark Knopfler

August 12, 1949

The distinctive textures of guitar arrangements became a cornerstone for Dire Straits when Mark Freuder Knopfler co-founded the group in 1977. He anchored the band as the lead guitarist, singer, and primary songwriter, steering them through 1995. His unique style involved plucking the strings with his fingers rather than using a pick, creating a smooth, fluid sound that stood out on the radio. The self-titled 1978 debut album introduced his storytelling approach, highlighted by the breakout hit Sultans of Swing.

Success followed rapidly as the band released Communique in 1979 and Making Movies in 1980. Beyond his commitment to his own band, he contributed guitar parts to Bob Dylan on the 1979 album Slow Train Coming and worked with Steely Dan on their 1980 release Gaucho. He later energized the rock scene with massive world tours and went on to compose memorable film soundtracks alongside a steady solo career that delivered studio albums well into the 2020s.

Simon King

August 12, 1950

The driving energy of the rock scene gained a powerful boost when Simon King stepped in as the official drummer for Hawkwind from 1972 to 1980. His thumping rhythms fueled the space rock pioneers during their most famous era, keeping the band steady through heavy cosmic sounds and wild stage shows. He also played drums on the 1975 solo album by his bandmate Robert Calvert, bringing his steady beat to extra projects. Before his long run with Hawkwind, he played drums for the psychedelic group Opal Butterfly from 1967 to 1970.

His powerful style helped define the underground music world as he recorded numerous studio albums and toured heavily until leaving the group.
