Ian Anderson
August 10, 1947
Ian Scott Anderson became famous for bringing the flute into the world of hard rock. He started Jethro Tull in late 1967 and led the group as an official member throughout their entire career. He often stood on one leg while playing his instrument, creating a wild stage persona that captured everyone's attention. He also handled the lead vocals and played acoustic guitar for the band, writing nearly all of their music.
His distinct acoustic guitar patterns and fierce flute solos powered massive albums like Aqualung and Thick as a Brick. He guided the group as they evolved from a blues outfit into a top progressive rock act. He stayed at the center of the band from 1967 until 2011, and then continued to tour and record under the band name starting again in 2017.
