 David Gilmour

March 6, 1946. Pink Floyd recruited David Gilmour in early 1968 to augment and eventually replace their original frontman, a position he maintained until 2014. As the lead guitarist and a primary vocalist, his melodic solos and atmospheric textures became the hallmark of the group’s most iconic studio releases. He contributed his distinctive lap steel guitar and bass guitar work to seminal albums like Meddle and The Dark Side of the Moon.

Beyond his legendary ensemble duties, David Gilmour released his self-titled debut solo record in 1978 during a hiatus from band recordings. His professional reach during the late seventies also included producing and discovering new talent, most notably helping launch the career of Kate Bush.

Throughout the decade, his mastery of the electric guitar helped transition the band from psychedelic experimentation into a global progressive rock phenomenon. He frequently played various keyboards and synthesizers in the studio to further expand the band's sonic architecture.
