 Derek Shulman

February 11, 1947. Derek Shulman fronted the progressive rock ensemble Gentle Giant as their lead singer, bassist, and recorder player from 1970 to 1980. Before this complex venture, he was the vocalist for the pop group Simon Dupree and the Big Sound between 1966 and 1969. Throughout the seventies, his versatile voice and command of multiple instruments steered the band through intricate albums like Octopus and Free Hand, defining a highly technical era of British rock.
