Mark Farner
September 29, 1948
Born Mark Fredrick Farner, Mark Farner co-founded Grand Funk Railroad in 1969 with Don Brewer and Mel Schacher. As the band's lead singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter, he helped build one of the most successful hard rock groups of the 1970s. He wrote or co-wrote many of the band's best-known songs, including "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)," "Bad Time," and "Heartbreaker."
Farner appeared on Grand Funk Railroad albums including On Time, Closer to Home, Survival, E Pluribus Funk, Phoenix, We're an American Band, and Shinin' On. His vocals, guitar work, and songwriting played a central role in the band's rise from a power trio to a major arena rock attraction during the decade.
After Grand Funk Railroad first disbanded in 1976, Farner launched a solo career and later participated in several reunions with the band. He has continued recording, touring, and performing with his own groups for many years. He remains active in music in 2026.

Jean-Luc Ponty
September 29, 1942
Jean-Luc Ponty emerged as a leading jazz violinist during the 1960s before helping bring the electric violin into jazz fusion during the 1970s. After working with Frank Zappa and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, he launched a successful solo career with albums such as Upon the Wings of Music, Aurora, Imaginary Voyage, Enigmatic Ocean, and Cosmic Messenger. His innovative use of the electric violin helped introduce many rock listeners to jazz fusion.
Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Ponty led a series of highly regarded bands featuring musicians such as Daryl Stuermer, Allan Holdsworth, Tom Fowler, and Steve Smith. His compositions combined jazz improvisation, rock energy, classical influences, and advanced studio production, making him one of the most recognizable figures in jazz fusion.
After 1980, Ponty continued recording, touring, and collaborating with artists from a variety of musical backgrounds. In 2024, he announced his retirement from regular touring while continuing to work on recordings, remasters, and occasional special projects.
