 Kerry Livgren

September 18, 1949

Kerry Livgren became a founding member of the rock group Kansas when the band formed in 1970. He played guitar and keyboards while also serving as the primary songwriter for the ensemble. He recorded their self-titled debut album in 1974, which helped introduce their progressive rock sound to the public.

His songwriting brought the group massive success with the 1976 hit Carry On Wayward Son from the Leftoverture album. He followed that up by writing the acoustic track Dust in the Wind for the 1977 release Point of Know Return. He released a solo project called Seeds of Change in 1980 and continued to record with Kansas until 1983, later rejoining them for various albums and projects through 2000.
