James Young
November 14, 1949
James "J.Y." Young joined Styx in 1970 and became the band's guitarist, singer, and songwriter during its rise from a regional Midwestern act to international success. His guitar playing and vocals appeared on albums such as Styx II, The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone, Paradise Theatre, and Kilroy Was Here. He wrote or co-wrote songs including "Miss America," "Snowblind," "Half-Penny, Two-Penny," and "Heavy Metal Poisoning," while contributing lead vocals to several tracks throughout the band's career.
Young remained with Styx through lineup changes, breakups, and reunions, becoming the only musician to appear on every Styx studio album. Alongside his work with the band, he released the solo album City Slicker in 1985 and continued writing and recording music. His steady guitar work and long association with Styx have made him one of the band's most enduring and recognizable members, and he continues touring and recording with the group.
