Tom Peterson
May 9, 1950
Thomas Norman Peterson helped establish the hard rock foundation of Illinois by co-founding Cheap Trick in 1973. As the bass guitarist for the band from 1973 to 1980 and 1987 to the present, he gained significant recognition for his pioneering use of the twelve-string bass guitar. His heavy, resonant tone became a signature element of the group’s power pop sound on their self-titled debut and the follow-up Color In Your Life.
The massive success of the live album At Budokan in 1978 propelled him into the international spotlight. He contributed melodic yet driving rhythms to multi-platinum records like Heaven Tonight and Dream Police. Before his departure in 1980, his creative energy and visual presence were vital to the quartet's peak era.
