Ric Ocasek
March 23, 1944 – September 15, 2019. Born Richard Theodore Otcasek, this performer formed the folk-rock trio Milkwood and released an album in 1973. He later founded Richard and the Rabbits and Cap’n Swing before establishing the definitive lineup of The Cars in 1976. As the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the group, he steered their rise to stardom with a self-titled 1978 debut and the follow-up Candy-O in 1979.
He remained the primary songwriter and a driving creative force for The Cars throughout their tenure from 1976 to 1988. While touring and recording, Ocasek also utilized his technical expertise to produce records for other artists. His distinctive style and rhythmic contributions helped define the transition from rock to the emerging new wave sound of the late seventies.
