 Frank Beard

June 11, 1949

Frank Beard played drums for a Texas band called The Outlaws in 1968. This local group was not the same southern rock band that became famous for the song Green Grass and High Tides. In 1969, a promotion company hired him to tour in a fake version of the British group The Zombies. This happened because the original band had already split up, so he and future bandmate Dusty Hill posed as members to trick the crowds.

The Moving Sidewalks hired Frank Beard later in 1969, and that group changed its name to ZZ Top that same year. He recorded on their first record in 1971 and on the album Rio Grande Mud in 1972. His drumming on the 1973 album Tres Hombres helped the trio get national attention. He toured and made albums with the group through the release of Deguello in 1979 and stayed with them for the next several decades.
