Pete Way
August 7, 1950 – August 14, 2020
Pete Way brought a thunderous energy to the British hard rock scene with his aggressive bass guitar playing. He co-founded UFO in 1968 and quickly became the visual and sonic anchor of the group. His driving rhythms fueled the band through a string of classic seventies albums like Phenomenon and Lights Out. He zipped across the stage in striped trousers, creating a high-energy show that matched the heavy riffs of the music.
His powerful bass lines helped the band transition from space rock into a pioneering heavy metal force. He anchored the rhythm section on the legendary 1979 live album Strangers in the Night. He continued powering the band until 1982, later returning for multiple stints between 1991 and 2008. Beyond his main band, he energized the rock world by forming Waysted and Fastway, and he also toured as a bassist for Ozzy Osbourne.
