Allan Holdsworth
August 6, 1946 – April 15, 2017
The distinctive textures of guitar arrangements became a cornerstone for Allan Holdsworth as he traveled through the progressive rock universe. He played guitar and violin in several groups, always altering his sound to match the fast-moving style of jazz fusion, which mixes jazz improvisation with heavy rock rhythms. He lent his skills to Tempest on their heavy 1973 debut album. Soon after, he powered the complex sounds of Soft Machine on their popular Bundles record.
His profile grew even larger when he stepped into the virtuoso lineup of the supergroup UK. He played on their famous self-titled debut in 1978. That same year, he anchored the rhythm section for drummer Bill Bruford on the classic Feels Good to Me project. He continued to light up the music scene by leading his own bands and releasing solo material from 1982 to 2012.
