Richard Manuel
April 3, 1943 – March 4, 1986. Richard Manuel rose to prominence as the soulful pianist and drummer for The Band from 1968 to 1977, and again from 1983 to 1986. His haunting falsetto and gospel-influenced rhythm piano defined the group’s early masterpieces. He contributed significantly to their initial creative surge, though his songwriting output slowed during the mid-seventies while the group toured behind major releases and backed Bob Dylan.
As The Band moved into the eighties, Manuel faced immense personal struggles. The transition from massive arenas to smaller club circuits deeply impacted his morale, leading to a resurgence of severe alcohol and substance abuse. Following a concert in Florida, a combination of professional frustration and long-standing depression culminated in his suicide. Manuel was discovered in his hotel room having ended his life by hanging.

Criss Oliva
April 3, 1963 – October 17, 1993. Christopher Michael Oliva founded the heavy metal group Avatar alongside his brother in 1978. Serving as the lead guitarist from 1978 to 1993, he developed a signature style that blended aggressive riffs with classical melodic structures. His early professional years were spent performing in local Florida circuits and rehearsing in a makeshift studio where he refined his technique.
While he briefly provided bass for select recordings, his primary focus remained on lead and rhythm guitar. By 1980, he solidified the core lineup of the ensemble that would eventually transition into the group Savatage. His intricate solos and technical prowess became the cornerstone of the band's identity during their formative era, establishing a foundation for their subsequent contributions to the progressive metal genre.
Criss was killed when a drunk driver crossed the center line and struck his car head-on in Thonotosassa, Florida. His wife was also in the vehicle and sustained serious injuries, but survived the collision.
