 Keith Reid

October 19, 1946 – March 23, 2023

Keith Reid co-founded Procol Harum in 1967 and became the band's principal lyricist throughout its most influential years. Working closely with Gary Brooker, he wrote the words for songs including "A Whiter Shade of Pale," "Homburg," "Conquistador," and "A Salty Dog." His imaginative and often enigmatic lyrics became an important part of the group's identity on albums such as Procol Harum, Shine on Brightly, A Salty Dog, Home, and Broken Barricades.

Reid remained associated with Procol Harum through its various reunions and later recordings while also writing songs for artists including Mick Grabham, John Farnham, and Chris Thompson. His long partnership with Gary Brooker produced one of the most distinctive songwriting collaborations in rock music, and his lyrics helped establish Procol Harum as a leading force in progressive and symphonic rock.
