 Pete Sears

May 27, 1948

In 1974, Jefferson Starship recruited Peter Sears to serve as their bass guitarist and keyboardist, a role he maintained until 1987. Before this tenure, he contributed piano to several landmark Rod Stewart recordings, including Every Picture Tells a Story and Never a Dull Moment. His versatility allowed him to anchor the rhythm section while simultaneously providing melodic textures on the organ and clavinet.

His professional path during the seventies included a stint with Copperhead and session work for various San Francisco artists. Within Jefferson Starship, his songwriting and technical proficiency appeared on platinum albums such as Red Octopus and Spitfire. He remained a constant presence throughout the group’s transition into a more polished rock sound by the close of the decade. His distinctive style blended blues sensibilities with soaring progressive rock arrangements.
