 Klaus Meine

May 25, 1948

Scorpions front man Klaus Meine joined the hard rock outfit in 1969, providing the soaring lead vocals that defined their signature sound. Alongside guitarists Rudolf and Michael Schenker, he performed on their 1972 debut Lonesome Crow. His career progressed through the seventies with a string of influential albums including Fly to the Rainbow and In Trance. He remained a constant presence as the group evolved their heavy metal style, eventually reaching a massive audience with the 1979 release of Lovedrive.

The explosive energy of the double live album Tokyo Tapes showcased his dynamic stage presence and vocal range. He appeared as the primary lyricist for the band, translating their musical ideas into powerful anthems during their residency in various international studios. Throughout these years, he anchored the lineup through multiple personnel shifts, maintaining a professional standard that established the group as a formidable force in the global rock arena through 1980 and beyond.

Robby Steinhardt

May 25, 1950 – July 17, 2021

In 1973, the progressive rock scene gained a unique sonic landscape when Robby Steinhardt helped launch Kansas. His classical training brought a sophisticated edge to the heartland rock outfit, heavily steering their signature sound. Serving as co-lead vocalist and playing the violin, his expressive bow work and rich baritone vocals provided a perfect counterpoint to the high tenor of Steve Walsh. He drove the energy on massive commercial triumphs like Leftoverture and Point of Know Return.

The dual-lead vocal dynamic and sweeping violin melodies powered timeless anthems like Dust in the Wind and Carry On Wayward Son. He anchored the band through ten studio albums, including Monolith and Audio-Visions, before stepping away in 1982. He eventually returned to the lineup from 1997 to 2006, contributing to the album Somewhere to Elsewhere.
