Joey Covington
June 27, 1945 – June 4, 2013
In 1970, the psychedelic rock scene shifted when Joey Covington officially joined Jefferson Airplane, replacing their original timekeeper and infusing the band with a energetic, driving rhythm. He played drums and percussions, having already contributed studio tracks to their 1969 album before securing his full-time role. He recorded and toured with the group until 1972, co-writing some of their well-known material.
Before his stint with the mainline group, he co-founded the blues-rock spin-off band Hot Tuna in 1969 alongside his fellow bandmates, anchoring their early live performances. He subsequently launched a solo career with a studio album release in 1973 and later formed the San Francisco All-Stars, continuing to tour and record with various rock projects through 2011. He was an official part of his core bands rather than a session player.
