Prince
June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016
Prince Rogers Nelson redefined the boundaries of popular music by merging funk, rock, and new wave into a highly distinctive sonic identity. Under his singular stage name, Prince secured a major recording contract and released his debut album in 1978, followed by a self-titled breakthrough release in 1979 that yielded his first major chart hits. Prince played the electric guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, and drums. He capped off the decade by forming a tight-knit touring band to translate his intricate studio creations into an explosive live experience.
A massive creative surge followed as Prince released a string of definitive, multi-platinum albums and cinematic projects across the next two decades, fronting his celebrated backing band The Revolution during his most commercially dominant era. He maintained an incredibly prolific output of studio albums and global concert tours from 1978 to 2015. He remained a monumental force in the recording industry, consistently pushing musical boundaries with his solo work and collaborative projects well into the current era.
