Michael Shrieve
July 6, 1949
Santana delivered a groundbreaking fusion of rock and Latin rhythms when Michael Shrieve stepped behind the drum kit as an original member in 1967. His explosive energy fueled the band through their historic performance at Woodstock and their first four studio albums. He co-produced several tracks and brought a unique jazz-influenced style to their signature sound before his departure from the core lineup in 1974.
He shifted focus to diverse collaborations and experimental rock projects throughout the rest of the decade. He recorded as a session player with Automatic Man and Go, while also tracking drums for various prominent fusion artists. He continued to record and perform with different groups and solo ventures, releasing independent electronic and jazz percussion projects well into 2010.
