Walter Powers

August 4, 1946 – May 27, 2026

Walter Powers built his early reputation on Boston's music scene before joining the Velvet Underground in 1970, replacing Doug Yule on bass during the band's final touring lineup. A bass player with a straightforward, dependable style, he helped keep the group performing during its closing years as one of the most influential bands to emerge from the late 1960s.
After the Velvet Underground disbanded, Powers remained active as a performer in the Boston area, playing with several local bands while continuing to support the regional music scene. Though his time with the Velvet Underground was brief, he remained closely associated with the band's enduring legacy.
